Hanako-san

Hanako-san or Toire no Hanako-san (トイレのはなこさん; "Hanako of the toilet"), the girl who scares the toilet Japanese schools ... one of the most popular legends and scarier in Japanese folklore.

Hanako-san is the ghost of a young girl who haunts the toilet Japanese schools, this girl is the center of a popular urban legend and became the world's most famous Japanese ghost.

According to urban legend, this mysterious girl usually appears in the third stall in the girls' bathroom on the third floor, but the legend varies from school to school. So, the appearance of Hanako differs considerably, some describe it as a girl that looks like typical schoolgirl, black bobbed hair, wearing a white shirt and a red skirt, while others describe with a long black hair, arms hanging, wearing a long white dress.

Mostly she is not aggressive, and remains hidden in the toilet, until a student goes to the third stall in the girls' bathroom on the third floor and knocked three times before asking, "Are you there, Hanako-san", hear a voice reply "I am here". If the student chooses to enter the stall there will be Hanako-san and then driven into the toilet.

The legend of Hanako-san, the girl of toilets, has greatly popularized during the decade of 1980, There are so many version of the original story of Hanako-san:

  • one version says it would be the ghost of a student died in a bombing during the second world war, while playing hide and seek.
  • Another story claims that it would be the vengeful ghost of a young girl harassed by a pervert (Professor, maniac ...). Trying to escape from her attacker, she took refuge in a toilet before being murdered.
  • In a third version, she had voluntarily given death in this bathroom, or she fell out the window.
Since then, she is also often represented in: manga, films, anime, novels...
