Learn Japanese : Master Basic Greetings in Japanese!

In this article, you're going to learn a few tips to master basic Japanese greetings.
you're gonna to learn how to say : Hi, how are you? in Japanese and how to answer.
Here's a typical conversation you hear everyday in Japan :
  • こんにちは。Konnichiwa = Hi or Hello.
Konnichiwa is a general greeting, meaning Hi or Hello. It also means good afternoon as one of the greetings for the day, but you can say konnichiwa all day long as greeting when you meet people.
  • おげんきですか? O-genki desu ka? = literally means are you healthy? but it's used to mean How are you?.
お O = is the respectful prefix (polite marker).
げんき Genki = means healthy.
です Desu =  expresses politeness in Japanese. It can often be translated as the verb TO BE.
か Ka = a particle used to form questions.

To answer the question O-genki desu ka? you say :
  • げんきです。Genki desu. = I'm fine. The only difference is you dropped the Ka when answering the question..
We can say the exact same thing with these two words :
  • げんき? Genki? = How are you?
  • げんきGenki. = I'm fine.
The only difference is the intonation . Be careful this is a very informal conversation don't use it with the teacher or in business situations.

Learn to Introduce Yourself in Japanese!

In this article, you're going to learn how to introduce yourself in Japanese.
There are three sentences to do this and it's super easy.
Okey, here's the three lines :

  • はじめまして。 Hajimemashite. = Nice to meet you.
This expression means "nice to meet you", (はじめまして。 Hajimemashite) literally means "for the first time". This phrase is often the first thing said when introducing oneself, and appropriate for all politeness level.

  • わたしは--your name--です。Watashi wa--your name--desu. = I am --your name--
Japanese language has one tricky point : the verb comes at the end of the sentence.
So, わたし Watashi = I.
は Wa =  particle used to indicate the topic in a sentence.
です Desu = at the end of the sentence expresses politeness in Japanese. It can often be translated as the verb TO BE.
So, if your name is Robin you put わたしはロビンです。Watashi wa Robin desu.

  • よろしくおねがいします。Yoroshiku onegai shimasu. = it’s a pleasure to meet you.
Yoroshiku means "good". By using this expression you're asking your interlocutor to be nice to you so that your relationship will get on well. Yoroshiku onegai shimasu is not only used in introducing yourself but when you are asking someone a favor.

We can say the exact same thing with these two words よろしく--your name--です。This is not for business meetings or formal situation but informal situations only :

  • --your name--です。--your name--desu. Example : ロビンです。Robin desu.
This means the same as Watashi wa Robin desu.

  • よろしく Yoroshiku = it means exactly the same thing as Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.
Now there's no excuse for you not to be able to introduce yourself in Japanese!

Secret about "one piece" what is really?

Everyone thinks that one piece is a treasure but I think it more than that...May be a letter in which it is written something like "Thank you, to who discovered the one piece. The true treasure is to have lived all this adventures. One piece is in your heart" something like that...Or, The Goat! It is who gives the most mystery in One Piece, so may be the one piece. xd

Personally I would say that one piece is what the crew search :

Luffy : the title of Pirate King
Zorro : Become the best swordsman in the world
Nami : Make a world map
Sanji : Find the legendary All-Blue Sea
Chopper : Cure all diseases worldwide
Franky : Build the boat that will travel all seas
Ussop : Become a brave warrior of the sea
Nico Robin : Find the Rio Poneglyphe
Brook : find Laboon

I really do not think that one piece is a treasure. And you what do you think?

How to wish a Happy New Year in Japanese and some Traditions

Today I invite you to discover the different ways to wish a happy new year in Japanese and some traditions :

The most evident way to translate "happy new year" in Japanese is :

しんねんあけましておめでとうございます
Shinnen akemashite omedetō gozaimasu

To translate this expression in detail :
  • しんねん shinnen = new year
  • あける akeru = begin, exemple : としがあける toshi ga akeru = start a new year
  • おめでとうございます omedetō gozaimasu = congratulations
Replay new year wishes :

ことしもよろしくおねがいします
Kotoshi mo yoroshiku onegai shimasu
  • ことし kotoshi = this year
  • も mo = also
  • よろしくおねがいします yoroshiku onegai shimasu = sentence polite which means thank you for your consideration
As often in Japanese, there is a shorthand way to say this set of sentence. We take the beginning of several syllables : shinen AKEmashite OMEdetō gozaimasu, KOTOshi mo YOROshiku onegai shimasu, which will turn into あけおめ!ことよろ!Ake ome, koto yoro ! this expression is very familiar so be careful when using it.
more formal way to start the new year よいおとしをおむかえください Yoi otoshi wo omukae kudasai which means = I wish you a happy new year
  • よい yoi = good
  • おとし otoshi = year
  • むかえ mukae = meet, greet
  • ください kudasai = please
Now I propose to tell you about some traditions :
  • お と し だ ま otoshidama : it is small envelope given to children for the new year containing some money.
  • は つ も う で hatsumode : first shrine visit.
  • Each throw money/coins into a designated box "さいせんばこ saisen bako" and pray for a happy new year.
  • It is also common to buy a "おみくじ Omikuji" kind of horoscope written on a piece of paper which can announce happiness may be not. When the prediction is bad, it is a custom to fold up the strip of paper and attach it to a pine tree.
  • ねんがじょう Nengajō : greeting card for the New Year. It is possible to write itself in calligraphy New Year's wishes, it is mandatory to deposit these cards in the mail before December 25 order to be received by the recipient on January 1, exactly.

"One Piece" Offers Subtle Tribute to End of "Naruto"

Yeah, that's it, it is well and truly over! In the 50th issue of Shonen Jump released November 6, 2014, on the internet that we find the last two chapters of Naruto.
In this issue, is also the 766th chapter of One Piece, in which the author Eiichiro Oda has crammed Naruto homages into the title page.

We can see the emblems of Konoha on Namie's dress, Luffy eating a bowl of Ramen Ichiraku. and a fox eat with them at the table wearing a T-shirt with a fish croquette (who said Naruto in Japanese).

One Piece logo is written with the symbol of Konoha, a Shuriken, and even Naruto himself in shadow.

There is even a hidden message in this drawing. the first signs of each menu are the following message: "Naruto otsukaresan deshita." "Thank you for your hard work, Naruto!".

That's not all, because who eats in front of Luffy in your opinion? The dress does remind you of anyone?

And in the very last page of Naruto, there is also a reminder to One Piece, with the presence of a graffiti symbol Luffy.
